Yesterday was a fun bday celebration with the coworkers. we are definitely a fun bunch. now i'm holding down the fort and listening to she&him. it's getting me through the morning. it's nice and mellow. i <3 zooey deschanel's voice. it reminds me of the songbirds of the 40s that i fell in love with as a child.
as a kid i would sit at home and watch amc all day. amc used to show classics from the 40s and 50s. there would be musicals from the studio system days. i loff that shit. like lena horne and rosemary clooney came from that era. now i'm not saying zooey sounds like them, but her style embodies that kind of sound. which i'm such a sucker for lol.
most of the songs are written by her. the bonus is she covers two of my favorite songs. you really got a hold on me by smokey robinson and i should have never by the beetles.
good music for a good morning.
yay
I turnet 28 last friday. It was an amazing birthday experience. I've learned from folks that this birthday indicates Saturn's Return. For those of you who don't follow astrology it means that the planet Saturn finally returns to the same place it was at your birth. So it's a time for shake ups and life reflection.
And by golly Saturn's Return has kicked my ass. In a good way. The past week has been full of self realizations, affrimations, and positive energy. I've concluded and pledged myself to the following things.
- Writing/Art has a dominant place in my life. I'm a writer. I'm an artist. It's where my passion lies. It's where I'm happiest. I've started to write more in my journal. I carry around a sketchbook and some paint markers, so when I feel the need to hash some shit out, I do it. I'm contemplating carrying the camera around again. I may need a bigger purse!
- Community organizing won't ever go away. When I hear the phrase "community organizer" I would always apply it to my friends. They work on campaign, etc etc. I just happened to be there to support. Support by staffing, planning, building, working. It's a part of who I am and I'm not gonna deny that anymore. I talked to my dad about all my community work and told him it's his fault I'm this way. "It's a Dolalas thing" I said. It's true! The family business is either education or community work. I have a Lola who has been a Dean of College in Mindanao for ages. My other Lola was a Judge in Orquieta. My uncle is mayor of our hometown. My other uncle ran against him! Civic engagement and community work is in the genes. The work isn't done to get glory, but done because it needs to get done!
- "Let it go" is my new mantra. I am the biggest worrywart. The stress I put on myself is worry about things I have no control over. I am now working on letting shit go. If it isn't my responsibility I will let it go. There is no need for my health to be put endanger over stupid shit like so and so dropping the ball on this and that.
Life feels really good right now. :-)
I've also picked up a shitload of music that I must share!!!
Bambu dropped this album last week. It's amazing. It's available at live shows and at beatrock.com He's able to make headbangers with a message. I play this at work and don't even bother to turn it down. Listen to it especially Swing, Like Us, Quit, Seven Months, & Life line.
this album is also hot. i know it's been out for a minute. when is aw the video for hero i knew i had to pick it up. Nas and Bambu both discuss how a black president won't change this country. there's other things that need to happen in our own communities for real change to occur. things that we as community members can work on to effect our own lifes and neighbors.
there is more music to discuss but i have no time. so i'll just post the albums i've bought!
well, not the whole weekend, but at least sunday. i left the house twice yesterday. once in my pjs to get lunch at the local jolly bee. gotta love fried chicken, rice, and crack gravy. i spent most of the day making presents. hazzah for presents. i bought way too much felt so i'm just gonna keep making them and maybe start selling them on etsy. i probably won't charge that much. bottom stitches are pretty ugly.
i did partake in some fine media this weekend.
while sewing toys freaks and geeks was in the dvd player. i've had this series for the past couple years. i just never opened it. i am notorious for this. and if by notorious i mean lazy, than yes lazy notorious for buying dvds and never opening them. two seasons of lost sit unopened in our dvd shelves. the unopened dvd thing has some benefit. folks feel guilty asking to borrow dvds when they haven't been opened. they don't want to be the first to crack it open. so i get to whorde all my dvds and not wonder if they get lost. although i lose them on my own. there is many a cd i've had to repurchase because it gets lost in my sea of crap.
i finally saw no country for old men. i'm not the biggest coen brother's fan. i blame film class for that. i had to watch barton fink in some early morning class. thus causing my hate for several films that many film nerds find zee bestest. no country for old men is good. suspenseful. i never want to mess with josh brolin or a scary spanish dude with neil diamond-esque hair. scary spanish dude kicks ass in this movie. i swear josh brolin sold his soul for eternal youth. i mean he had to have been in his early 20s in goonies, which means he's like in his 40s now. i was surprised to see woody harrelson in the film. he steals the show with his scenes. go watch it. it's rad.
and teh mister picked this up for me at amoeba. socal love = sublime. listening to sublime takes me back to high school and trying to figure out the lyrics to date rape. in college i bought this limited edition sublime comp. i wore that cd out. the folder that cd was in got stolen/lost/borrowed never to be returned. i have been sad ever since. every time i go to amoeba i try and find it, but it's never there. major sad face. when this box set came out a couple years ago it was on my wish list. no one picked it up for me. double major sad face.
so in exchange for picking this up for teh mister. i finally got the sublime boxset. hazzah.
time for work friends. l8ters sk8ters
i spent this weekend in long beach because i facilitated a retreat for students who will be orientation advisors for an orientation my department conducts. it was awesome. i'm still processing everything that's happened.
afterwards i went home. rested for a bit. and then headed to sunset junction. last year teh mister dj'd @ kicks the whole weekend. this year he had friends help him out. some highlight pics:
spotting a striped sylar and friends
asian cowboy pornstache
teh mister and his fans

me and derf. i didn't have anything signed, but i was able to take a pic with him. yeah i'm a total nerd.
teh mister was going through records and kept coming across one name. yes, mr. james gadson. i just can't get over his hair...
mamo and egon. they were chitchatting in front of the egyptian theater and kept going back and forth, wondering if i should take a pic. i've never been a fan that does that. i don't know why, perhaps it's because i've grown up in the valley and seeing celebrities has been so normal. i never wanted to bother folks with a picture, even if i was a fan. this was one of the few times where i really am a fan, so i sucked it up and asked to take a pic. at first i was just really happy to take a pic of the two of them, but then some lady asked if i wanted to be in the pic as well.
that's how this pic happened.
.so fresh
this show is currently in my top 5 shows/concerts.

c'est la vie. star shoes was like my cheers without everyone knowing your name. they did however know your face. bypassing the line to get in was fun times. i must say it's been a drag on saturdays not having a thing to do.
good news is it's coming back @ a different spot on july 28th.
bad news is i shall be in san diego with all the cool geeks and nerds at comic con. yes there are cool geeks and nerds...i think...
teh mister and mister lake forest decided to be stripe twinsies that night. isn't that precious?
yay my cousin graduated from college. she lives all the way out in texas, so she came out to cali for a grad party.
here are some obligatory cute niece and nephew pics
i thought i had more pics, but i guess there all on the fishy. they'll join the vox world soon enough.
i missed out on tuesday night at the cafe to go catch brasilintime at the egyptian theater.
it was spectacular. i nerded it out on the music. seeing tim maia record covers made me smile. they never played any of his music, but it was nerd of me to even recognize him, no?
highlights: i got a picture with my dj crush and Ivan "Mamão" Conti. at first it was just the two of them, when some random lady asked if i wanted to be in it. then i got put in the middle and yes i had a goofy grin afterwards. subsequently i called j9 to discuss these events. the pics were on the lomo fishy, so pics will be coming shortly. hazzah!
i wish i got a pic of João "Comanche" Parahyba, he was in Trio Mocoto. he's totally amazing and trio mocoto is rad. mayhaps tomorrow or on thursday at the show at the mayan.
i fly out for sf on friday. somehow i have to find time to dye my hair, pluck my eyebrows, and pack. do all those errands in the midst of all this music nerdiness. my cousin from Australia is online right now (hi cherry!) and wondering how i'm even up. i have no idea. she says i'm too busy all the time. am i? i honestly have no idea where i find time to do anything nowadays, but all that matters is that i'm having fun while doing whatever it is i do, no?
c'est la vie.
time for bed and my 5-6 hours of sleep. it will most likely be 4. hazzah
so fresh
ps...fishy pictures coming soon. i promise.
