i have been looking for this film forever. i first saw it in film class and fell in love. this is one of the films i remember that confirmed my choice in majoring in film studies. mizoguchi is an amazing director. the french loved him especially those cahier du cinema auteurs (truffaut, goddard, etc). mizoguchi's work is simply beautiful. when i first saw this film i was so awestruck at how mizoguchi's eye worked. you can pause certain scenes of this film and it will look like a japanese woodprint. the texture and composition of the shots are breathtaking. sansho was showing at lacma two weeks ago, but i missed it because i was dirt tired from graduation parties. when i saw this on the shelf i practically died. it wasn't on sale, but i had to buy it.
thus ends my film school nerdiness. at least its proof positive that i learned something in college
so fresh
