What was your major or field of study in college? Did you wind up working in that field or using that degree? If not, what field have you wound up in?
Submitted by sneuf.
i like the answers people gave to this question. so now i shall try my crack at it.
at my undergrad i came in as a film studies major. i figured if i'm going to go to have to study something, it might as well be something i liked. i liked watching movies. so i studied movies. my family and friends constantly got my major confused. they thought i wanted to make movies.
WRONG.
i never wanted to make movies in my life ever. act in them...maybe. write them...again a maybe. i'm from "the valley" acting kids and writer/director parents were the norm. i had a knack for sleeping in class during screenings and waking up at the critical parts. and by critical i mean the parts we'd have to write about in a paper or discuss in lecture. this phenomenon is nothing new. several other students in my class did the same thing. but there was always those geeks who i despised during lecture. they'd go on and on about some existential crap during a part of the movie that half the class was asleep through and the professor would straight up eat that shit up.
i was notorious for sleeping because i snored. yup, SNORED. it was my friend lisa's job to hit me once i started to get into full on REM, but she couldn't wake me up and i snored. i became known as the narcoleptic girl in the program. but seriously...your in the same classroom from 10am to 1 and then 130 -330. 10 am was early and early meant snoreeeeeeee.
i picked up an asian american studies double major close to the end of my third year of school. i wanted to hang out for as long as possible. plus i had taken so many asian am classes that i only needed a handful to get the degree. i liked the professors and most of my friends who i hung out with in kaba/apsa/other student org on campus were in those classes with me.
thank god i went to public school because it didn't cost me an arm and a leg...maybe a hand and a couple of toes. when i graduated i dabbled in the mortgage industy and started to hate it and the corporate meeting planning world that became my life. i left and am now in grad school getting my master's in education so i can work at university one day.
i get to apply my asian american studies stuff to my current job at the asian american center on my campus. the film stuff? not so much. i have some friends who gaffaw at me for not discussing film to the umpteenth degree. i just can't. studying film made me hate film at one point in my life. it ruined it for me. i could see the lighting mistakes and it would bug me. i would pick up on really shitty editing that no one cares about. i would see the references to some archaic russian film that no one else knows and roll my eyes. damn you film studies!!!!! but...i've taken a break. and i appreciate the craft once again. good writing is hard to do and i appreciate it now more than ever. i'm a comedy lover so i eat all these "stupid comedies" because the reality is they aren't so stupid. if writing comedy would be so easy we wouldn't have to deal with movies like "are we there yet"
this has become rather long....am i doing anything that applies to my major? kinda. does it matter, absolutely not. i knew going into college that i loved to learn. i'm a nerd for saying this, but it's true. i like going to class and being in lecture and discussing things i find interesting. it didn't matter to me that i wouldn't have the skills to be an investment banker or a lawyer. life's too short to be in class learning about something you hate. so i got my money and my parents money's worth and studied what i love. and now my degree hangs out in my parents living room, where i think it belongs. that degree is really for them. my master's degree...it's for me. i'm paying for it, i'll keep the paper. my undegrad degree is like a receipt for my parents. a receipt on an item they can't really return.
What is your home decorating style, and how has it changed over time? Do you have plans to redecorate?
Submitted by enSue.
i don't really have one. is messy a decorating style? how about bohemiantechgamernerdchicartistclotheshorse?
i just love this question because of top design.
jonathan adler would bid designers adieu with this phrase...oh i fuckin love this corny shit...i watch too much bravo.

i'm off to the desert in a couple of hours.

i'm happy/sad/bummed.
bummed: because i turned in a paper i worked extremely hard on, but i received a low grade on a group presentation that i did last week. my politics class has been my most rewarding class, but it also made me lose all faith in my academic abilities. i don't know how that is simultaneously possible. i just need to pass this class....i'm mulling inside about this whole process. i've already broken down to teh mister about this. i'm also sad because of this.
sad: so as i broke down in tears, crying because of my lack of self-efficacy, i began to realize that i'm off to the desert without the mister. i know that coachella is gonna be rawresome, but the one person who i'd want to share this with is him. he is the biggest muzak nerd i know and he would appreciate this event. he's got to work and now he's actually helping out with the block party in p-town. if you're in the los angeles area you should check it out, it'll be rad times.

happy: because i'm going to see/hear/enjoy some rad music
alright...time to pack up some miscellaneous stuff
What's something you should throw away, but can't?
my baby pillow. my parents have attempted to throw it out, but i have been stubborn, living up to the phrase tigas ulo which my parents like to throw at me. literally the phrase means hard head. what can i say...i'm a sentimental fool
Who taught you how to cook?
Submitted by Donna.
pops: i would watch him in the kitchen. he always has a way of throwing stuff in a pan and making it taste good.
moms: she has to have a cookbook in front of her. no cookbook, no recipe, improvisation = me and dad pretending to like what she's made for us.
tito mike: when i was a kid i spent a lot of time at his house. he would make meals to feed his kids: sean, charlie, and vince, and then me. money was tight, but food was not.
lola 'sabel: her bone marrow soup was divine. i can smell the garlic fried rice coming from her kitchen. when i go to her house and see the pots and pans it's almost as if she never left me.
the tele: thank you pbs afternoon cooking shows on the weekend, pre cable. thank you food network.

thank you qotd, you keep me lighthearted when things aren't so great.

Who taught you how to ride a bike?
that would be my pops. he's the handsome guy in the tshirt and vest. yeah yeah my dad is wearing a "vest." i don't personally understand his style. actually wait i do. my dad's style is tshirt, jeans, boots (most likely timberlands) and when the occasion needs it...a vest. that's my tito alex next to him and my moms next to tito alex. moms would never be able to teach me how to ride a bike, since she doens't know how to do so herself. she's a self described "city girl." apparently "city girl" equals no bike riding. in reality she didn't take part in any fun outdoor activities because she didn't want to get dark. damn you colonial mentality! damn you colonial ideal of beauty!!
pops taught me how to ride a bike within the confines of my townhouse driveway. it's probably 100 yards long and i would ride up and down the driveway on my bike with training wheels. eventually the training wheels came off and i was able to ride to the corner of nordhoff and burnet. (valley kids will know exactly where that is. yup i'm from that part of the 818) that was a big deal since if i crashed and burned on nordhoff i'd slide into oncoming traffic of a major street.
most of my bike riding took place at my cousin's house in arleta. after all our st. genevieve elementary school homework was done we'd run outside, hop on bikes or scooters and ride around the neighborhood. sometimes our adventures would take us the ice cream man's house where our pockets would be full of change scrounged from the spare change jars and ride back with our lips red from popscicle stains. other times we'd ride up and down the street, cruising along like we didn't have a care in the world. to be honest, we didn't. those were some rad times.
Have you ever met any celebrities? Any interesting stories?
Submitted by Tasha.
hah this question makes me laugh. growing up in the valley i've had several run ins. in fact as a kid i thought i was a weirdo for NOT wanting to be in the business. kids at my elementary school, pre-catholic school days, were all about doing commericals and movies and shit like that. one of my friends in kindergarten actually scored a magic mountain commerical. that was cool.
at pinecrest we would put on plays where our parents would come and ooh and ahh at our performances. they would have all the classes for a grade do one big play. afterwards the parents would visit their child's class. in kindergarten my friend's step dad was lyle alzado .
he was really nice. nothing like this pic here. when he passed away i was truley bummed out. i felt really bad for my friend corey. i would never want to lose a parent so publicly.
when i worked at borders in the valley, different folks would come in. there were horror stories about the different celebs that came in. richard dryfuss is a jerk. he would come up and eat all our vanilla caramels and not pay for any of them. we used to have story time in the mornings and different nannies and moms would bring in their rugrats. there was this really cute swedish/nordic kid. the only reason i knew he was swedish/nordic was because i would hand him his juice and his mom would tell him to say "thank you" as takk. one time his mommy didn't bring him in, but his dad did instead. his dad turned out to be chris titus.
i remember he was a lil stressed out at the time. it was probably due to the fact that his show as in the process of being cancelled.
when i was at zanzibar for the lesley smith l.a. carnival, the usual dj celebs were there. j-rocc, cut chemist, ego, miles, etc. the highlight was madlib. the running joke with the mister is how he proudly claims oxnard, which is where madlib is from. point hueneme to be exact. as we sat to enjoy the show madlib sits in our booth. it's a fairly large booth and there was space available. so i motioned for mike to say something to him. nada. so...i move on over to madlib's side of the booth and say what's up and that i have a lot of friends from oxnard. he just nodded, gave me a dap, and smiled. yeah fool was high as a kite. that's my funniest random celeb story
then there's these guys. they do the hip and the hop, at least that's what i've heard.
How do you pass the time during a flight? What do you bring in your carry-on?
crappy movies
books bought in the airport store

and my favorite...sleep delicious sleep
You're trapped in a (temporarily) out of order elevator - who would you like to be trapped with?
